At this year’s opening concert of the Haydneum Eszterháza Festival, audiences will once again encounter a remarkable Orlando paladino. Conducted by György Vashegyi and featuring the Haydneum’s returning Hungarian and international soloists, this performance presents Haydn’s opera first staged in 1782, which draws on Ludovico Ariosto’s epic to place love and the magic that aids lovers at its centre. In its own day, the opera was Haydn’s most successful stage work. Within only a few years it travelled from Eszterháza to Bratislava, Budapest, several German cities, and even Saint Petersburg. The surviving incomplete manuscripts preserved in London and Berlin have been reconstructed on the basis of a rehearsal copy held by the National Széchényi Library, allowing the work once more to be heard in its full richness.
