A 18th-century musical world may have revolved around Vienna, yet its full map was far broader. The pioneering Hungarian ensemble of historically informed performance, Capella Savaria, draws an imaginative line this time between Salzburg, Eszterháza, and the Prussian royal court. Mozart composed the Serenata notturna at the age of just twenty, a serenade that combines festive and playful elements and evokes the incomparable atmosphere of the period’s evening, often open-air music-making. The Bohemian-born Franz Benda, as concertmaster at the Prussian court, was a defining figure of his time. His works largely represent the sensitive, emotionally expressive Empfindsamer Stil, including the Flute Concerto in E minor, which was perhaps even performed by Frederick the Great himself. The soloist for this evening is Andrea Bertalan. The second half of the programme is centred on an early symphony by Joseph Haydn, preceded by an unusual movement by his brother Michael Haydn, who was active in Salzburg: the overture to the Latin school drama Applausus.
