Franz SCHUBERT: Winterreise, Op. 89, D. 911

The young Dutch baritone Raoul Steffani is already a highly sought-after artist and one of the brightest rising stars of the new generation. Alongside his operatic roles, he is also a highly acclaimed oratorio and lieder singer, and the recipient of numerous international awards.
His partner on this occasion will be the distinguished fortepiano specialist Petra Somlai, professor at the Royal Conservatoire of The Hague and a returning guest of the Haydneum. Their programme features Piano Sonata in B-flat major, D. 960, Schubert’s final piano sonata, alongside his last song cycle, Winterreise, composed to 24 poems by the prematurely deceased Wilhelm Müller. Although the wandering journey, so fashionable in the period’s monodramatic tradition, invites many interpretations, both text and music strongly evoke death, and the works performed may therefore also be regarded as Schubert’s swan songs.
