Vashegyi György Receives Another Prestigious French State Honour

Conductor György Vashegyi was awarded the rank of Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters (Officier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres) on 26 October by Jonathan Lacôte, Ambassador of France to Hungary. The prestigious distinction, conferred by the French Minister of Culture on 21 May 2026, recognises Vashegyi’s outstanding contribution over several decades to the performance and promotion of French opera repertoire, both in Hungary and internationally. He has pursued this work at the helm of the ensembles he founded—the Purcell Choir and the Orfeo Orchestra, resident ensembles of Haydneum – Hungarian Centre for Early Music—as well as the Hungarian National Philharmonic.

According to the French government’s official statement, the honour recognises Vashegyi György’s dedicated efforts to strengthen cultural ties between France and Hungary and to promote French musical heritage in Hungary. The rank of Officer (Officier) marks a natural continuation and elevation of the conductor’s international standing. In 2021, the French state had already awarded him the rank of Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters (Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres) in recognition of his work in reviving French Baroque opera and the French musical repertoire. The latest distinction acknowledges this focused mission at an even higher level.

This far-reaching cultural contribution is inseparable from the ensembles founded by the conductor, the Purcell Choir and the Orfeo Orchestra, which have a history spanning approximately thirty-five to thirty-six years and have also served as resident ensembles of Haydneum – Hungarian Centre for Early Music since 2021. Over the past fifteen years, with the Purcell Choir and the Orfeo Orchestra, Vashegyi has conducted concert performances and CD recordings of eighteen French operas that are rarely heard or had not been performed for centuries. These include works by Boismortier, Cardonne, Cherubini, Gervais, Leclair, Lemoyne, Lully, Méhul, Mondonville, Montéclair, Rameau and Stuck. The recordings were made in collaboration with the Centre de musique baroque de Versailles (CMBV) and have repeatedly received major international recording awards, including the Deutsche Schallplattenpreis, the Diapason d’Or, the International Classical Music Awards and the Diamant de l’Opéra awarded by the Paris-based Opéra Magazine.

Alongside these historically informed projects, major productions with the Hungarian National Philharmonic have also played a key role in broadening recognition of French music. Under György Vashegyi’s leadership as its principal music director, the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra has become a leading international centre for the French Romantic operatic repertoire. It has now recorded five complete French Romantic operas for the Palazzetto Bru Zane label: Massenet’s Werther, Lalo’s Le Roi d’Ys, Thomas’s Psyché, Silver’s La Belle au bois dormant and Delibes’s Jean de Nivelle.

By conferring the rank of Officer, France has once again formally affirmed that György Vashegyi and the institutions and ensembles under his leadership are among the leading international figures shaping the preservation and performance of Europe’s shared musical heritage.
