One of the principal missions of the Haydneum – Hungarian Centre for Early Music is to uncover and revive the extraordinarily rich musical heritage connected to Hungary within the repertoire of the eighteenth century. Through extensive archival research, forgotten manuscripts—many of which have remained unheard for centuries—are rediscovered and brought back into the concert repertoire.
As a result of these efforts, more than two thousand works have already been digitised, and a substantial number are being prepared in modern scholarly editions. Drawing on this remarkable body of rediscovered music, Haydneum’s resident ensembles—the Purcell Choir and the Orfeo Orchestra under the direction of György Vashegyi—bring little-known works back to life each summer, offering audiences the rare opportunity to encounter music that has long remained hidden from public view.
These programmes provide a unique insight into the world of eighteenth-century vocal and instrumental music of the highest artistic quality, while inviting listeners to join a shared journey of discovery in pursuit of these exceptional musical treasures.
