Georg Friedrich HÄNDEL (1685-1759):
Messiah, HWV 56 (1742)
The Messiah is one of the most famous Baroque oratorios. Handel composed its music in less than a month, between August 22 and September 14, 1741, using a text compiled by Charles Jennens based on the New Testament and the Psalms. The Purcell Choir and the Orfeo Orchestra have performed Handel’s oratorio countless times, and this production is made even more exciting by soloists who move with the utmost ease in the English Baroque style, under the direction of Belgian conductor Bart Van Reyn, a specialist in oratorio performance.
