There is no shame in not knowing Antonio Casimir Cartellieri’s opera Rübezahlt, premiered in 1801, as the composer and his works were quickly forgotten after his death in 1807 at the age of 35. Aapo Häkkinen played a major role in its rediscovery, finding the score of the opera, which is now being performed in concert form, along with other operas and oratorios, in the library of the Florence Conservatory. Häkkinen highlights Cartellieri’s colorful orchestration, especially in the wind parts.
