From the mid-18th century onwards, songs catering to the musical tastes of the educated bourgeoisie and compositions written for various keyboard instruments began to appear in large numbers. At the same time, alongside professional performances, the participation of knowledgeable amateurs in the performance of music became increasingly important. Haydn’s Sonata in E-flat major (Hob. XVI:49), composed for Maria Anna von Genzinger, reflects this as do C. Ph. E. Bach’s sonatas composed for “connoisseurs and music lovers” and Beethoven’s bagatelles.
