Haydneum Concerts in Eszterháza

19 July – 25 August 2024

This July and August, Haydneum welcomes audiences to Eszterháza over a total of six weekends, inviting those who appreciate music—more specifically, music performed on period instruments.

Once again, the summer program series, now considered a tradition, will feature numerous outstanding representatives of historically informed performance: from ensembles such as the Purcell Choir, Orfeo Orchestra, Capella Savaria, and Aura Musicale, to keyboard artists including Petra Somlai, János Balázs, József Balog, Mihály Berecz, Hilko Dumno, and Zsombor Tóth-Vajna. Their participation will bring to life, through a series of concerts running each weekend from Friday through Sunday evening, the musical world that flourished in this region during the heyday of the so-called “Hungarian Versailles.” This will be achieved through performances of works that were once part of the local repertoire, many of which were composed directly in the service of or commissioned by the Esterházy princes. The works of the princely Kapellmeister, Joseph Haydn, and his contemporaries will sound in the palace’s historic spaces, in the truest sense of the word, in their original setting—no longer for the entertainment of princes and their fortunate noble guests, but for our own delight.

Haydneum Concerts in Eszterháza

21 July – 27 August 2023

Haydneum, in close collaboration with Eszterháza Közhasznú Nonprofit Kft., aims to realize its summer concert series with the goal of drawing significant attention to the musical life at the Esterházy Palace in Fertőd—one of Hungary’s most unique tourist and cultural destinations—and of transforming the palace once again into a thriving cultural center reminiscent of the 18th-century court of Prince Nikolaus Esterházy “The Magnificent”.

We consider it important that anyone visiting Eszterháza encounters high-quality, authentic performances played exclusively on period instruments within the walls of the palace, and that this program can be relied upon throughout the entire summer season.

In 2023, we celebrate the 250th anniversary of Empress Maria Theresa’s visit to Eszterháza. To commemorate this occasion, Haydneum is organizing a series of concerts at various locations throughout the year. The highlight of the series will undoubtedly be the Haydneum Eszterháza Festival, held for the first time from September 1 to 6, 2023, taking place exactly 250 years after the original visit at the same historic location.

String Quartets in Eszterháza

2-18 August 2022

Experiencing Haydn—both performing and listening to his music—at Eszterháza is truly a unique experience.

Among the ensembles performing in Haydneum’s string quartet concert series, organized in collaboration with the Philharmonia and in partnership with Eszterháza Public Benefit Nonprofit Ltd., we are pleased to welcome the mentors and fellows of the Végh Sándor String Quartet Program. This program, initiated by Philharmonia Hungary in 2021, is dedicated to preserving and developing the Hungarian string quartet tradition.
