SUMMARY:4th Haydneum Eszterháza Festival – Haydn: Orlando paladino
DESCRIPTION:J. HAYDN (1732–1809):\nOrlando paladino\, Hob. XXVIII:11\n(concert performance) \nBuy tickets at a 20% discount until June 30\, 2026!\nCo-operating partner: Eszterháza Közhasznú Nonprofit Kft. \nAt this year’s opening concert of the Haydneum Eszterháza Festival\, audiences will once again encounter a remarkable Orlando paladino. Conducted by György Vashegyi and featuring the Haydneum’s returning Hungarian and international soloists\, this performance presents Haydn’s opera first staged in 1782\, which draws on Ludovico Ariosto’s epic to place love and the magic that aids lovers at its centre. In its own day\, the opera was Haydn’s most successful stage work. Within only a few years it travelled from Eszterháza to Bratislava\, Budapest\, several German cities\, and even Saint Petersburg. The surviving incomplete manuscripts preserved in London and Berlin have been reconstructed on the basis of a rehearsal copy held by the National Széchényi Library\, allowing the work once more to be heard in its full richness.

SUMMARY:4th Haydneum Eszterháza Festival – Schubert: Winterreise and the "Grand" Sonata in B-flat major
DESCRIPTION:Franz SCHUBERT (1797–1828): Piano Sonata in B-flat major\, D. 960\n—\nFranz SCHUBERT: Winterreise\, Op. 89\, D. 911 \nThe young Dutch baritone Raoul Steffani is already a highly sought-after artist and one of the brightest rising stars of the new generation. Alongside his operatic roles\, he is also a highly acclaimed oratorio and lieder singer\, and the recipient of numerous international awards.\nHis partner on this occasion will be the distinguished fortepiano specialist Petra Somlai\, professor at the Royal Conservatoire of The Hague and a returning guest of the Haydneum. Their programme features Piano Sonata in B-flat major\, D. 960\, Schubert’s final piano sonata\, alongside his last song cycle\, Winterreise\, composed to 24 poems by the prematurely deceased Wilhelm Müller. Although the wandering journey\, so fashionable in the period’s monodramatic tradition\, invites many interpretations\, both text and music strongly evoke death\, and the works performed may therefore also be regarded as Schubert’s swan songs. \nBuy tickets at a 20% discount until June 30\, 2026!\nCo-operating partner: Eszterháza Közhasznú Nonprofit Kft.

SUMMARY:4th Haydneum Eszterháza Festival – Gringolts Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Joseph HAYDN (1732–1809):\nString Quartet in E major\, Op. 17 No. 1\, Hob. III:25\nString Quartet in C minor\, Op. 17 No. 4\, Hob. III:57 \nBuy tickets at a 20% discount until June 30\, 2026!\nCo-operating partner: Eszterháza Közhasznú Nonprofit Kft. \nAt the concert of the internationally renowned Gringolts Quartet\, founded in 2008\, two relatively early yet already fully mature quartets from among Haydn’s 68 string quartets represent the Eszterháza years\, when the outstanding violinist Luigi Tomasini was among Haydn’s musicians. Composed more than a decade and a half later\, in 1788\, the C major quartet from the Op. 54 set reveals a Haydn who had by then achieved international fame and become fashionable in both Paris and London. It was in response to Parisian taste in particular that the composer supplied the strikingly virtuosic\, high-lying first violin part\, together with the work’s occasionally almost symphonic sonority.

I:78 \nBuy tickets at a 20% discount until June 30\, 2026! \nCo-operating partner: Eszterháza Közhasznú Nonprofit Kft. \nStephan MacLeod invariably surprises audiences with imaginatively constructed programmes. At the closing concert of the Haydneum Eszterháza Festival\, two settings of Salve Regina are interwoven with both familiar and lesser-known orchestral works. The Marian hymns by Michael Haydn and Georg Albrechtsberger represent the early Classical style. Opening the concert is a symphony from 1770 by the Swiss composer Gaspard Fritz\, whose music was well known in both France and England in its day\, while the concluding work\, Haydn’s Symphony No. 78 in the Sturm und Drang style\, dates from rather more than a decade later. The deservedly popular Keyboard Concerto in D major\, Hob. XVIII:11 (1779) remains Haydn’s only keyboard concerto still regularly performed today. The soloist will be the Russian musician Olga Pashchenko\, who\, after graduating from the Moscow Conservatory\, deepened her engagement with historical performance practice during her studies in Amsterdam.
