SUMMARY:3rd Haydneum Eszterháza Festival / Mihály Berecz\, Orfeo Orchestra\, Attilio Cremonesi
DESCRIPTION:Antonio ROSETTI (1750–1792):\nSymphony in G minor\, M.A42\nJosef Antonín ŠTĔPÁN (1726–1797):\nPiano Concerto in B-flat major\n—\nWolfgang Amadeus MOZART (1756–1791):\nSymphony No. 40 in G minor\, K. 550 \n  \nIn the age of well-organised state apparatuses and digital recording systems\, it is completely natural that our linguistic and cultural identity is primarily determined by the nationality we are born into. However\, before the concept of the nation-state emerged in the 19th century\, this was not the case at all. For instance\, in the 18th century\, cultural identity was more typically influenced by the path in life that one chose or was able to choose. \nAccordingly\, musicians born in Central Europe at that time typically referred to themselves by German or Italian names. German was used because both the musicians in question and their potential employers almost exclusively spoke German as their mother tongue; Italian\, on the other hand\, was popular as it served as a symbol of the musician profession. This is almost certainly why the active bass player and composer born in the then-German Litomerice area a few years before Mozart\, Anton Rösler\, called himself Antonio Rosetti. He was a renowned composer\, and in Prague\, his Requiem was the one to publicly commemorate Mozart’s passing in 1791. On the other hand\, Josef Antonín Štěpán\, who belonged to Haydn’s generation\, pursued a career in Vienna as the harpsichord tutor of archduchesses Maria Carolina and Maria Antonia under the name Joseph Anton Steffan. \nAlthough at the time\, they were unlikely to be listed among the greatest works\, Rosetti’s witty Symphony in G minor and Štěpán’s virtuosic concert piece both bring to mind the unsettling genius\, Mozart\, whose figure is unavoidable in the genres of both keyboard concertos and symphonies\, and whose 1788 composition\, Symphony No. 40 will close today’s programme. \n  \nCo-operation partner: Eszterháza Közhasznú Nonprofit Kft.

Palúch) \n  \nThe term divertimento means an entertaining piece. As many other definitions used in 17th- and 18th-century musical practice\, this one is also witty and windy at the same time: it cannot be interpreted as it communicates nothing about the work’s arrangement\, format\, or structure\, yet it is also accurate as it clearly specifies its character and function. Divertimentos were pieces intended for entertainment; the name applies to typically multi-movement music that often resembles dances and is generally written for chamber ensembles with a clear formulation and light-hearted tone. \nOf course\, as always\, there is a lot of overlap in this case\, too. Serenades and partitas\, even sonatas and symphonies\, were labelled as divertimentos at that time\, when society’s need for transcendent experiences had not yet seeped into the sophisticated enjoyment of musical recreation as it did later in the Romantic period. Haydn’s dozens of chamber music pieces are great examples for this\, which were originally composed by the master for baryton (the somewhat unfashionable favourite of Nikolaus I\, Prince Esterházy\, similar to a viola da gamba)\, strings and a few wind instruments\, and were published by the Viennese Artaria as divertimentos but a few of them were released in London as symphonies. Pieces No. 3 and 12 of the series are accompanied by a concerto by Johann Gottlieb Graun\, a famous violin virtuoso and the former concertmaster of the Berlin Opera\, together with a few works that present exotic objects of fascination for 18th-century Central Europe\, the Romani musical culture that was thriving in the Ottoman–Habsburg border region\, interpreted through learned contemporary instrumental language. \nCo-operating partner: Eszterháza Közhasznú Nonprofit Kft.

SUMMARY:3rd Haydneum Eszterháza Festival / Andreas Staier – fortepiano
DESCRIPTION:Wolfgang Amadeus MOZART (1756–1791):\nFantasia in C minor\, K. 475\nCarl Philipp Emanuel BACH (1714–1788):\nSonata in E minor\, Wq 59/1 (H 281)\nFantasia in C major\, Wq 61/6 (H 291)\nJoseph HAYDN (1732–1809):\nVariations in F minor\, Hob. XVII/6\n—\nHAYDN: Sonata in E-flat major\, Hob. XVI/49\nLudwig van BEETHOVEN (1770–1827):\nBagatellen\, Op. 126 \n  \nFor a time\, an interesting debate emerged in music history circles about whether Variations in F minor (Hob. XVII:6) with their passionate tone were written by Haydn to commemorate the death of his highly esteemed friend\, Maria Anna von Genzinger. Although this assumption cannot be proven\, this emotionally charged origin story is attractive as it illustrates how the aesthetic of ‘personalised music’ became more prevalent during that time. In the middle of the 18th century\, a large quantity of lieds and pieces written for various keyboard instruments began to appear to serve the musical capabilities of the educated middle class. Furthermore\, in addition to professional renditions\, the participation of knowledgeable amateurs in the performance of music became more and more important\, as reflected in Haydn’s Piano Sonata in E-flat major (Hob. XVI:49) as well\, which was composed for Frau von Genzinger. Not to mention C. Ph. E. Bach’s sonata series written ‘for connoisseurs and amateurs’ (für Kenner und Liebhaber)\, the capricious motivic ideas and bold modulations of which will be introduced to the audience by two pieces in the programme of this concert. The democratisation of sensitivity and the need for subjective art became more and more significant around the turn of the century\, as evidenced by Beethoven’s bagatelles\, among others\, and went on to dominate the creative dialogue between composers and the audience up until the Romantic cult of overwhelming virtuosity took over. One of the living legends of early music performances\, Andreas Staier\, will contribute to this dialogue on one of the most popular contemporary instruments\, the fortepiano. \nCo-operating partner: Eszterháza Közhasznú Nonprofit Kft.

SUMMARY:3rd Haydneum Eszterháza Festival / Haydn and Schubert Piano Trios
DESCRIPTION:Joseph HAYDN (1732–1809):\nPiano Trio in G major ‘Gypsy Rondo’\, Hob XV:25\nFranz SCHUBERT (1797–1828):\n‘Notturno’ in E-flat major\, Op. 148 D 897\nHAYDN: Piano Trio in D major\, Hob. XV:24\n—\nSCHUBERT:\nPiano Trio No. 1 in B-flat major\, Op. 99 D 898 \n  \nThe 18th century was simultaneously the century of Baroque and Rococo\, sentimentalism and enlightenment\, Bach and Händel\, Haydn and Mozart. What’s more\, this rather culturally rich period also brought about a spectacular transformation in the function of keyboard instruments. Although such instruments served as essential pillars of harmony in earlier periods\, their role gradually changed from the middle of the 18th century onward. The basso continuo\, the continuous chordal joining of music\, became unnecessary at that time\, thus releasing the keyboard instruments from their previous duty. \nAll of this was perhaps most clearly apparent in chamber music. Since from the second half of the century\, the functional correlations of harmonies required less and less stabilizing and accompanying contribution from chordal instruments\, the harpsichord with its metallic sound could slowly be replaced by the fortepiano with its hammer mechanism and smoother timbre\, the latter being more than capable of participating in the thematic discourse with their string (or even wind) counterparts. The Trios composed by Haydn in 1795\, at the end of his second trip to London\, are great examples of this innovation (including the Hungarian-style rondo within the G major piece\, which plays with Romani and Verbunkos elements). The two 1827 works by Schubert\, Piano Trio in B-flat major and the slower piece in E-flat major\, also known as Notturno\, which was perhaps originally intended by the author to be part of the Trio; however\, it serves as a better example for how 19th-century artists were working on weaving the keyboard instrument with its rich timbre and rapid movements into the texture of chamber music. \n  \nCo-operating partner: Eszterháza Közhasznú Nonprofit Kft.
