This year we hear five cantatas by Johann Sebastian Bach\, each possessing distinctive features that demonstrate the inexhaustible variety of his music.\nThe opening work\, catalogued as BWV 150\, is among the composer’s earliest surviving cantatas\, possibly dating from 1706\, though its liturgical occasion remains uncertain. First performed in Leipzig on 30 January 1724\, Cantata BWV 81 explores the theme of faltering faith; its closing chorale is the second verse of the hymn Jesu\, meine Freude. Cantata BWV 138\, composed the previous year\, also quotes a chorale from 1561\, and Bach later reused its sole aria in the Mass in G major. Cantata BWV 39 belongs to the third Leipzig cantata cycle\, while BWV 122 is associated with the Christmas season and was first performed on the last day of 1724.\nWith its musical\, textual and theological richness\, this Advent concert invites us to step outside the pressures of daily life and\, in keeping with Bach’s intentions\, to prepare inwardly for the feast to come.

DESCRIPTION:BACH:\nIch hatte viel Bekümmernis\, BWV 21\n—\nJesu\, meine Freude\, BWV 227\nMagnificat in D major\, BWV 243 \nOrganiser: Filharmonia Hungary\nCo-operating partner: Haydneum \nBach’s vast collection of sacred music spans all seasons. His Passions are essential for Lent; the Christmas Oratorio is a highlight of winter celebrations; and his funeral cantatas\, along with the Magnificat‘s thanksgiving hymn\, are key parts of the liturgical year. Yet\, these works are rarely performed together. The second concert in the Unikum \nSeries is unique because it combines pieces linked to different times and occasions. The cantata “Ich hatte viel Bekümmernis” (“I Had Much Affliction”) is not associated with any specific feast day and acts as a unifying piece\, as its text blends ideas from various Psalms. Its spiritual focus is on trusting God through hardship and suffering. \nJesu\, meine Freude is among Bach’s most complex and meaningful motets. It was probably written for a funeral and centers on a meditative reflection on the significance of a Lutheran chorale. The piece focuses on personal themes of faith\, comfort\, and hope that last forever. It ends with the Magnificat\, a song of praise sung by the Virgin Mary in Luke when she visits her cousin Elizabeth\, who is also pregnant. Traditionally\, in liturgy\, this text is linked to either summer or Advent. However\, this evening\, we explore all these emotions together: confidence\, grief\, and gratitude. One concert captures an entire year’s worth of feelings.

SUMMARY:Capella Savaria and Purcell Choir – Stölzel: Brockes passion
DESCRIPTION:STÖLZEL: Brockes passion\, 1725\n(Hungarian premiere) \nOrganiser: Filharmonia Hungary\nCo-operating partner: Haydneum \nToday\, the concept of Passion is deeply linked to Bach’s two surviving Passion compositions. However\, the Baroque Passion repertoire was much broader than often believed\, and many of its compositions are only now coming back into view after centuries of neglect. This concert provides a rare chance to hear one such rediscovered masterpiece. Although Barthold Heinrich Brockes was primarily a civil servant\, he made a lasting impact on music history in 1712 by writing his own Passion libretto. As one of the first in the German-speaking world to do so\, he used the operatic recitative style common in Italian opera to tell the story\, while creating original texts for the arias and choruses that matched the emotional and dramatic moments. This effectively laid the groundwork for the structure that Bach later used in his Passion settings. Brockes’s libretto drew the attention of leading composers\, being set to music by figures like Handel and Telemann\, among others. Bach also borrowed some passages but never composed a complete setting of Brockes’s text. At the same time Bach was creating his Passion works\, Gottfried Heinrich Stölzel produced a full musical setting of Brockes’s libretto. Bach respected Stölzel greatly and performed some of his works in Leipzig. Though Stölzel’s Brockes Passion faded from the concert scene for many years\, it has recently regained interest. Attendees of this Palm Sunday concert will be among the first in Hungary to experience this extraordinary piece.
